Village Rat Group
A small group met on 9 March. They enjoyed a walk in fine, warm conditions and the low catch rate continues- 5 mice and 2 rats.
The traps were checked on 23 March - a cool, cloudy day. Catches were 3 rats, 3 mice. Thank you to all the helpers.
Wayne and Ray checked the line on 12 March. Catches were 1 ferret, 1 rat, 3 hedgehogs, 1 cat, 2 possums. They enjoyed a fine, warm day and the excellent views from the ski field.
Wayne and Sim checked the line on 26 March. On arrival at the first ford the road was closed due to the rain 2 days previously. With skill and cunning our trappers managed to get through and the subsequent fords were less challenging. It is a privelege to be in this beautiful environment and to be able to help support the biodiversity. Catches were 1 ferret, 3 hedgehogs, 1 rabbit, 3 rats. There were no catches on the ski field road.
The aniseed dowels in the possum traps were replaced- this needs to be done every 4-6 weeks.
Russell caught a ride to Coldwater Hut in the DOC boat on 24 March. He noted wasps were at a low level and while checking traps on the way back enjoyed the birdlife : fantail/piwakawaka, robin and tui. He tried to photograph some un-coperative brown creepers.
Catches included a stoat. He also took these photos.
