This cheeky stoat was photographed in Grant and Wendy's garden. The next day she visited with her kits. She is still roaming free.
Whisky Line - Peter Hale 8 February
Wayne and I did the line today, 4 rats, 3 stoat and 3 possums.
We were pleased to find most of the Erayz baits still in place with only about 6 needing replacement so it appears mice are not too much of a problem on this line at the moment. All sentinels were changed to the plastic bait clips baited with possum dough.
Wasps numbers were generally low with just a few hotspots in the areas with lots of honeydew. The birds were very quiet probably due to the fact that it is moulting time hence the very scruffy fantails however there were lots of silvereyes accompanied by their noisy demanding fledglings. Sections of the track were covered in white putaputaweta (marble leaf) flowers and we passed one juvenile rata in flower.
Rainbow Line - Russell Chilton 6 February
All DoC 200 and 250 traps in the Rainbow, should have have mouse exclude'r cages fitted now, I also cleared the line with hedgehogs at 5 & 21, rats at 36, mouse at 201, Stoats at 173, 149, & SMb, a Ferret at six mile and possums at 178 M, 173 F, 162 F
Caught nothing in the middle of the run, but I also see that wasp stations have been put out up to six mile, this should should make the run much safer to clear when the bait is put out in the near future.
Total stoats for December / January made 110 for the 2 months, their numbers have dropped thank goodness, but the 3 possums and the ferret gave a surprise..
